MIAMI, Okla. — Limited spots remain for Local Environmental Action Demanded (LEAD)
Agency’s summer camp that offers students in Northeast Oklahoma a one-of-a-kind experience
combining music and art with environmental education and outdoor exploration.
The day-camp is slated for June 8-11 at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. Campers will
have the opportunity to play different instruments including a drumkit, bass, electric guitar, as
well as explore photography, art and design. No music experience is required.
LEAD’s Music Camp is open to youth and students in 5th through 12th grades in Ottawa
County. Spots are limited and are donation-based. No child will be turned away due to lack of
funds. Online registration can be completed at leadagency.org/camp
"LEAD Summer Camp is always a fun-filled experience,” said M. Bailey Stephenson, education
and engagement coordinator at LEAD Agency. “This year is extra exciting because we will be
joined by some awesome music teachers. Campers will get to learn guitar, write songs, explore
outdoors, and more."
Based in Miami, Okla., LEAD Agency, Inc. is an environmental justice organization that aims to
raise awareness about the effects of contamination on human health and the environment.
Through public education, outreach, action, involvement with appropriate government agencies,
and litigation, LEAD works to organize a citizen response toward cleanup and restoration of
environmental harms, while striving for pollution prevention and environmental sustainability.
The annual summer camp has been hosted by LEAD Agency for more than a decade as part of
its initiative to educate the younger generation about Tar Creek and provide them with the tools
to promote environmental stewardship.
“Our youth are the future, and LEAD Agency’s summer camp is where they begin becoming the
leaders our communities depend on,” said Rebecca Jim, executive director of LEAD Agency.
Last year, campers created a documentary film about the Tar Creek Superfund site and
included their own song. Campers learned how to shoot, interview and edit a documentary from
start to finish.
This will be one of two camps offered by LEAD Agency, Inc. this summer. Dates and registration
information for the next summer camp, offered to younger elementary-age students, will be
announced soon.
