Recycle Tar Creek Bike Ride
NEW DATE for the Recycle Tar Creek Bike Ride is June 3.
The weather will be warmer and we expect dry, Make plans to join us for a great ride OR WALK and see the sites in Commerce, OK: Route 66, Mickey Mantle's Boyhood Home, the latest sink hole and some great flea markets and local cafes for lunch. For the longer ride you will see sink holes and chat piles and Tar Creek. You will see the abandoned towns of Picher and Cardin and the remains of Douthitt, a mining town You will see reclaimed land and workers making a difference in the Tar Creek Superfund Site, by the Quapaw Tribe, DEQ and EPA and the passive water treatment systems designed by OU's Dr. Bob Nairn. Today we think of Tar Creek as an orange, polluted waste, but this polluted present is in fact atypical for these waters. Until 1979, Tar Creek was a clear, fresh, swimmable, and fishable community resource. And it will be so again - sooner than you would think possible. Experts now estimate that Tar Creek will be clean again in under a decade!! Short bike routes in Commerce, OK and long routes will be available for all ages and abilities. Longer routes will also explore the mining districts of Cardin and Picher. We will travel across paved roads, so all bicycle types are suitable for this ride. All riders must bring and wear helmets. Free Fun Walks begin at 10 a.m. 1 mile or 2 mile options. See you June 3rd! |
